Vertical gardening can be done in many different ways by using hanging bins, baskets or hanging glass jars. Designer Carolijn Slottje, from Studio Carolijn Slottje, envisioned a new method for planting and has designed the vertical Quilt Garden.
A blanket of plants
Quilting is a craft technique in which different, in this case hexagonal, pieces of fabric form a patchwork. In this way a blanket of plants is created and then hung on the wall. The designer has used a composition of undyed wool and jute. By using black wool, Carolijn hoped to mimic the look of soil and give a natural, organic feeling. By placing different hexagons together, it is possible to create a patchwork of plants.
Durable and natural
Carolijn Slottje wanted to make her own modular planting system, which she could make bigger or smaller. Most of the plant walls she encountered were made of plastic and were difficult to water. By using materials from nature, it gave a very durable and natural feeling. Because the plants are in small bags that are waterproof, the wall is easy to adjust and water.
